New Street Sign Regulations Will Reduce Accidents

Street signs are some of the most important traffic signs around. These signs serve to not only provide for a community, they also help with directions. Visitors of a city rely on these signs in order to get to their destinations. They are very critical for the residents of a community as well. The Bush Administration made some pertinent changes to street signs around the country. Many of these changes were set to begin after the administration had gone.

These changes are to be enacted by local communities, towns, and cities in America. Local and federal authorities will find themselves responsible for street sign changes being implemented. Because of the general state of the current economy, many state representatives and citizens are not in favor of these costly changes to street signs. Some feel that current signs are adequate for today’s needs.

The designs of new street signs, however, are meant to benefit the community. They should make driving more simple and safe. This safety branches out to both other drivers and pedestrians. It will be important for individual cities to find reasonably priced sign companies. Depending on the size of the city, it may require many changes and street signs. This consideration can really affect the overall cost of these signs. Here are some of the changes that will be required:

Larger letter sizes

The MUTCD or the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices will be instrumental in these sign changes. One of the changes will include larger letter sizes. By January 2012, specific changes to signs will be completed. Letters will change from 4 inches to 6 inches. This will apply to speed signs above 25 miles per hour. These changes have a number of important safety benefits. Larger letters help to ensure that speeds are maintained. This will also help motorists to protect themselves and others by monitoring their own speed.

Reflective letter changes

Another critical change to signs will include reflective lettering. Specific signs will require reflective letters to be mandatory. These changes are due to be complete by January 2018. These new letters also provide a measure of safety to citizens. They are easier to see during the evening and night hours. Drivers will be more observant of reflective letters than traditional ones.

Changes to street names

There will be changes made to street names as well with these new regulations. Street names will no longer be in all capital letters. Signs will not simply be changed to comply with regulations. When new signs are needed, however, they will meet new standards. Cities around the country will find that there are numerous benefits related to complying with these new street sign rules.
